Home –

Drivers License is now re-opened with the following conditions:  Please bear with us as we work to meet your drivers license needs.  We remain at 50% staffing due to Orders from the Governor and Supreme Court. You may experience long wait times or busy signals due to the large volume of calls and short staff.

Anyone who has a license/permit/State ID that expired or will expire between March 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020 AND anyone who has lost their license or had it stolen and whose address and name remains the same MUST renew/obtain their license by mail.  You MUST fill out this form and return it by mail or drop off in person to 1655 Delaware Crossing, Independence, KY 41051 or the Sheriff’s drop box at the Kenton County Administration Building 1840 Simon Kenton Way Covington, Kentucky 41011, along with payment (check- preferred-made payable to John C. Middleton, Circuit Clerk, money order- or cash) or debit/credit card (you must provide the required information or we will not process your application). Paying by check or money order will expedite your order.

We will take all other drivers license issuance (except permits- see below), including Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and those who have a change of name or address by appointment at the Independence office ONLY.  To schedule an appointment click here

Beginning July 6, 2020 we will also have a waiting line.  Anyone with an appointment will be taken first but you may wait in line to attempt to get your license issued the same day.  There are no guarantees.  This is NOT for permit testing.  Permit testers must make an appoint with KSP, below.  Masks will be REQUIRED to enter, by order of the Governor and Supreme Court. You will also be asked to certify that you do not have COVID-19 symptoms.

Driver testing will also resume!! Permit testing (written) has been happening. We are told road tests will resume, first with the Kentucky State Police calling those who had an appointment prior to closing and then others will make appointments on-line.  Permit testing may be suspended while road tests are given.  Visit the Kentucky State Police website here for more information.  If you make a permit appointment with the Kentucky State Police you DO NOT need to make an appointment with our office.  We have set aside times during the testing days just for you.

If your license expired March 16- June 30, 2020, you DO NOT need to rush to obtain your expired license. Governor Beshear announced that any Kentucky driver whose license expired during those dates, will have that license extended for ninety (90) days while the state continues to encourage people to stay way from public buildings.  The courts are also opening for limited dockets Monday June 1. For court information visit our courts website here.

REAL ID UPDATE as of September 20, 2019

The KY Transportation Cabinet is currently working with the legislature to implement regional offices to issue the optional REAL ID – compliant cards.  The cabinet believes this is the fastest and most efficient path forward to make REAL ID -compliant cards available statewide before the federal deadline of October 2020.  If you absolutely need one now, you may obtain one at the Department of Transportation in Frankfort, Kentucky.

This office will continue to issue standard licenses and ID credentials that will be acceptable for domestic travel and admittance into military bases and restricted federal buildings until October 2020.

A passport is an acceptable form of identification for all the above and IS required for international travel.

See http://www.drive.ky.gov for additional information and updates.
